GMAC eyes mortgage firm

GMAC LLC, the former financial services division of General Motors Corp., could buy another large non-U.S. mortgage firm and combine it with Residential Capital LLC, a struggling GMAC-owned mortgage company, according to a GMAC news release Wednesday.

Once a cash cow for GM, GMAC's problems have been cause for concern at GM, which owns 49% of GMAC after selling a 51% stake in the financial services firm last year to a group led by Cerberus Capital Management.

Corzine to pitch tolls plan in Randolph

Corzine hasn't said how much tolls may increase, though a recent report suggested a 45 percent toll hike was needed to widen the New Jersey Turnpike and fix bridges on it and the Garden State Parkway.

Seating at the public meetings will be limited. People who want to attend the meetings must complete a registration form online at http://www.state.nj.us/townhallmeetings.

Some have said tolls might increase 50 percent, which would mean a more than $3.20 increase on the $6.45 it currently costs cars to drive the length of the New Jersey Turnpike.

A 70-cent Garden State Parkway toll would rise by 35 cents.

Officials have said Parkway tolls have not increased in 17 years and that 35 percent of the fees are paid by out-of-state residents, while on the New Jersey Turnpike only half of tolls are paid by New Jerseyans.

We got a call from Jim Twite of Brewster this morning that the Cumberland Farms near Route 28 and Bank Street, AND the Harwich Gas at 435 Route 28, Harwichport next to the 400 Club, are both selling regular for $2.29.

The price is $2.32 on Rte 6 in Wareham, at both Lukoil and with the hippies... who now have a bedsheet hanging up in their office with "There Goes The Neighborhood " written on it. I love those people.

7-11 in Wareham, $2.32.... same with Exxon at the Buzzards Bay rotary.... ya know, the rotary that used to have the tugboat.

$2.51 at the Citgo near the Christmas Tree Shop in Sagamore.... $2.65 at the Citgo on 28 South in Bourne.... $2.64 at the Citgo on 28A, Bourne/Falmouth line, with $2.89 diesel for all you mothertruckers.

Gift receipt is no guarantee for refund of price paid

Orentlicher wrote to Dick's customer service and got the same answer in an e-mail.

"This is not some small company," Orentlicher said. "It's a billion-dollar chain listed on the New York Stock Exchange. How can they not have the capability to look up past purchases?"

Attempts to reach the spokesman for Dick's were unsuccessful.

Fortunately, Orentlicher was able to get the original receipt from his mother-in-law, after an awkward explanation about why he was returning the jacket and needed to know the price she had paid. He said Dick's is issuing him an additional $10 refund.

But it's another rude wake-up call for consumers. About 40 percent of us return holiday gifts, the National Retail Federation said.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that many shoppers don't feel comfortable asking someone what they paid for a gift.

Family businesses need to avoid favoritism

This will permit them to gain a perspective on how the business world works outside a family setting.

Problems and differences of opinion are common in a family business. It is important to keep the lines of communication clear. Weekly meetings to assess progress and air differences work well for many family firms.

Drawing some lines between business and family life will also help. Limit business discussions outside the office. Save them for an appropriate time - not at a family get-together.
